We are excited to announce that we are expanding our Prison Monitoring team by hiring a dedicated Prison Monitoring Manager to lead our efforts in Central Pennsylvania. This investment will enhance our capacity to ensure that all incarcerated people in Pennsylvania can receive timely, high-quality assistance.
In a state where 61,000 people are incarcerated on any given day, the need for monitoring conditions is more important than ever. The 300 percent surge in Pennsylvania's incarceration rate since 1980 has given rise to urgent challenges: limited access to healthcare, deteriorating conditions, and the stark reality of social isolation within correctional facilities.
The Central Regional Manager will play a crucial role in fulfilling our mission of promoting health, safety, and dignity behind bars. They will do this by supporting and developing a regional network for more than 75 volunteers monitoring conditions in the 30 correctional facilities from Gettysburgh to Tioga. With the appointment of our first regional Prison Monitoring Manager in Western PA in 2021, we doubled the number of people served in Western Pennsylvania prisons and jails in one year. We're excited for a similar impact in Central Pennsylvania!
The appointment of our next regional Prison Monitoring Manager marks a significant step in advancing our strategic plan, which focuses on expanding our regional prison oversight, enhancing programs for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, and strengthening our data and information-gathering capacity to raise awareness of critical issues.
