The Pennsylvania Prison Society will join the City of Philadelphia’s Reentry Partnerships Wellness Event on June 14, 2025, to announce expanded support for its Prison Visit Transportation Program, made possible through the support of the Community Advisory Committee, sponsored by the Division of Criminal Justice within the City’s Office of Public Safety. This essential program helps Philadelphia families stay connected to incarcerated loved ones across Pennsylvania.

Since 1787, the Pennsylvania Prison Society has worked to promote the dignity of incarcerated people by advocating for humane prison conditions and supporting family connections. Its Prison Visit Transportation Program provides reliable and affordable transportation from Philadelphia to state correctional facilities–alleviating barriers to visiting:

  • Most prisons are located far from Philadelphia
  • Public transportation options are limited or non-existent
  • Families often face overwhelming costs, with visits totaling up to $300 including transportation and lodging
  • Nearly half of low-income households lack access to a vehicle

“I was so amazed and happy to find the Prison Society bus service. Without it, I’d spend $200–$300 to visit my loved one or drive six hours for a one-hour visit. This service is truly a blessing.” - Family Member From Philadelphia County

The program directly addresses those obstacles–keeping families connected and communities stronger. Research shows that maintaining family connections during incarceration leads to safer prisons and better outcomes after release.

  • In-person visits lower recidivism by up to 20%
  • Prisons with more visits report fewer disciplinary problems
  • Family support improves reentry success

Helping families connect is an investment that builds true public safety, and video and phone calls should be an addition to—not a replacement for—invaluable in-person visits.” says Prison Society Director of Family and Community Support, Kirstin Cornnell

During the June 14 event, attendees will hear more about how Philadelphia is working with the Pennsylvania Prison Society to expand access to this essential transportation program, helping ensure more families can stay connected despite the physical and financial distance.

Families who attend the Wellness Event will receive information about how to access upcoming services and be prioritized as the expanded program rolls out.
