The Prison Society's Services to Elder Prisoners (STEP) Program helps keep dignity alive.
The STEP program is designed to assist prisoners age 50 and older to adjust to prison life, develop and/or improve life skills, and prepare for successful reintegration into the community.
STEP Case Managers at each state correctional institution conduct ongoing life skills workshops and individual sessions to help older prisoners build their self-esteem and their communication and mediation skills.
Activities of STEP groups vary from prison to prison, depending on the needs and desires of the STEP clients.
Some examples include:
- Senior Olympics
- Staying Well-Various health topics
- Guest speakers and discussion groups
- Book clubs and creative writing
- Release Plan development
- Resume writing
